Highlander Radar Integration & Software Guide: InsHelper, ECDIS Overlay & VDR Recording

A deep-dive technical protocol manual: configuring Highlander InsHelper software, IEC 61162-450 Lightweight Ethernet, SNGF gateway protocols, CCRP antenna offsets, VDR image capture, and AIS target fusion.

Technical Authority: Seanav Marine Navcom Integration Desk
Standards: IEC 61162-1/2 • IEC 61162-450 • IEC 61996
Recorders Supported: Highlander HLD-B2 / HLD-S2 VDR

1. Integrated Bridge Systems (INS) & InsHelper Architecture

In modern integrated bridge systems, navigation radar can no longer function as an isolated sensor. Beijing Highlander utilizes the InsHelper daemon and SNGF (Sensor Network Gateway Framework) to manage high-bandwidth radar image distribution across shipboard local area networks (LAN).

2. ECDIS Radar Overlay Configuration & CCRP Offsets

Superimposing live radar video onto electronic navigational charts (ENC) requires sub-pixel spatial and temporal alignment:

  • Network Multicast UDP: The MCU streams compressed radar sweeps across an isolated IEC 61162-450 network segment to avoid saturating general bridge automation lines.
  • CCRP (Common Consistent Reference Point): Antenna offsets (fore/aft and port/starboard relative to the ship reference origin) must be calibrated in the InsHelper configuration utility. Failure to set CCRP introduces parallax offsets between ENC coastlines and raw radar land returns.

3. Mandatory VDR Interfacing (Highlander HLD-B2 & HLD-S2)

Under IMO SOLAS V/20 and Resolution MSC.333(90), Voyage Data Recorders must capture radar video pictures from master bridge installations:

VDR Interfacing Channels

  • Digital Network Capture: Highlander HLD-B2 VDR records raw radar sweeps over IEC 61162-450 Ethernet every 15 seconds.
  • Frame Grabber Video: For legacy VDRs, RGB/DVI/VGA analog/digital video output is sampled at high resolution (1280×1024 / 1920×1080).
  • Serial Tracking Sentences: Target tracks ($RATTM, $RATTD) and own-ship data ($RAOSD) are routed via serial RS-422 at 38,400 baud.

4. Advanced Target Tracking & AIS Fusion Algorithms

Highlander radars incorporate automated AIS/ARPA fusion algorithms. When an ARPA-tracked radar echo correlates with an AIS position report within predefined speed, heading, and distance windows, the radar automatically merges the targets into a single integrated symbol, reducing bridge visual fatigue and preventing false collision alerts.
