Sperry Marine NAVIGAT 2200 Gyro Compass: Solid-State FOG Specs, Architecture & Spares

System Overview: Sperry Marine NAVIGAT 2200 Solid-State FOG

The Sperry Marine NAVIGAT 2200 represents Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine’s premium solid-state gyrocompass-fog/” class=”seanav-internal-link”>Fiber Optic Gyrocompass (FOG) solution. Engineered without any rotating mechanical parts, bearings, or supporting fluid containers, the NAVIGAT 2200 eliminates conventional gyrosphere overhauls and fluid replacements entirely. It delivers exceptional mean time between failures (MTBF > 100,000 hours), instant settle times, and extreme accuracy across harsh sea states, high-speed craft maneuvers, and offshore dynamic positioning operations.

Seamlessly integrated with Sperry Marine’s digital CompassNet bus architecture and NAVITWIN IV heading management systems, the NAVIGAT 2200 distributes heading, rate of turn (ROT), roll, and pitch data across dual Ethernet LANs and high-speed IEC 61162-1/2 serial channels with full Bridge Alert Management (BAM) compliance.

Seanav Field Service & Maintenance Protocol

Because the NAVIGAT 2200 utilizes solid-state optical physics, annual mechanical sphere overhauls are eliminated. However, annual safety inspections and regulatory surveys require verification of interface lines, battery backup switchover, and alert management compliance:

  • Firmware & Calibration Verification: Health checks on DSP calibration constants, optical drift rates, and diagnostic self-tests via the touch CDU.
  • CompassNet Network Diagnostics: Bus integrity validation, packet collision testing, and verification of serial RS-422 telegram transmissions ($HEHDT at 40 Hz to radar and autopilot).
  • Emergency Power Simulation: Verification of instant AC-to-DC 24V switchover without loss of heading reference or system reboot.
  • BAMS & Alert Verification: Testing alert propagation to the Bridge Alert Management system under sensor obstruction or loss of speed log input.
