Description
System Overview & Engineering Architecture
The JRC JHS-183 AIS is a shipborne Automatic Identification System engineered for collision avoidance and maneuvering support. The system is built around JRC’s latest-generation display and transponder platform, incorporating digital signal processing, increased circuit integration, and optimized transmission power in the new transponder design. The JHS-183 consists of two primary components—the AIS Controller (NCM-983) and the AIS Transponder (NTE-183)—connected by a single coaxial cable of up to 50 meters. This compact two-component architecture significantly reduces installation time and simplifies onboard integration.
The system operates across the VHF maritime frequency band of 156.025–162.025 MHz, with default channels at 161.975 MHz and 162.025 MHz, and DSC receive-only capability at 156.525 MHz. The JHS-183 is IMO type-approved, confirming its conformity with international maritime navigation standards. The AIS can “see around corners,” allowing avoidance of dangers before visual contact has been established, making it an essential tool for safe navigation in congested waterways and reduced visibility conditions.
All ship information—including static and voyage-related data such as the ship’s name and cargo, as well as dynamic navigational information including position, course, and speed—can be transmitted and received by the JHS-183. The information broadcast from other ships displayed on the AIS, together with the geographical information shown on the radar or ECDIS, provides highly important data for strategic decisions and for prompt contact with other vessels.
Core Features & Operational Advantages
Dual Color LED Backlight Display
The JHS-183 features a highly visible 4.5-inch FSTN LCD display with a resolution of 128 by 64 pixels. The display incorporates dual-color LED backlighting in white and orange, making it easy to operate in various light settings on the bridge. The display is fully dimmable with 4 dimmer levels, and the keyboard comprises 12 backlit keys for ease of use in low-light environments. The LCD is rated for a lifespan of 50,000 hours, guaranteeing many years of continuous operation regardless of the LED backlight color selected.
Guard Zone Function
The guard zone function allows the user to set a defined area on the display, providing a visual and audible alert for any vessel entering that area. This feature enhances situational awareness and supports proactive collision avoidance maneuvers, particularly in high-traffic zones and port approaches.
Own Group Vessels Recognition
The JHS-183 incorporates a function that recognizes own group vessels. When presetting a vessel’s identification, it can easily be shown on the display, streamlining fleet management and enabling operators to quickly distinguish friendly or affiliated vessels from other traffic.
AIS-SART Reception
The JHS-183 supports the reception of AIS-SART signals, which are automatically sorted to the top of the screen. This feature enhances search and rescue operations by prioritizing the most critical distress-related targets, ensuring rapid response during emergency situations.
Self-Diagnosis & Remote Maintenance System (RMS)
The built-in automatic self-diagnosis function allows easy maintenance and contributes to an ever higher system reliability. JRC’s Remote Maintenance System (RMS) enables cost-effective monitoring of the JHS-183’s performance and functionality while at sea, significantly reducing downtime and maintenance costs. This capability is particularly valuable for vessels operating on long-haul routes or in remote areas where shore-based support may be limited.
Uniform Operation & Up to 200 AIS Targets
The JHS-183 is able to display up to 200 AIS targets simultaneously. The excellent on-screen menus follow JRC’s philosophy of uniform operation and an easy-to-use Man Machine Interface, which greatly shortens most users’ learning period. The new generation display software approach ensures consistent and intuitive navigation across all system functions.
Flexibility & Interfacing
Interfacing is made easy and cost-effective. Connect your radar or ECDIS, GPS, and gyro to the display and you are all set. With the optional all-new connection box (NQE-5183), you receive all the interfacing needed for advanced networking, such as DGPS, alarm, long-range, and more. A dedicated pilot plug port and LAN interfacing for maintenance or connecting to the ship’s network is also readily available.

Installation
The JHS-183 is designed for straightforward installation. The two components are light and compact, with only one coax cable required between the display and transponder. No flush mount kit is required—screws are nicely concealed behind the front cover. The system connects to radar or ECDIS, GPS, and gyro for full integration with existing navigation equipment. The pilot plug port and LAN interfacing provide additional connectivity options for maintenance and ship network integration.
Compliance Standards & Approvals
The JRC JHS-183 AIS holds IMO type approval, confirming its conformity with international maritime navigation regulations. The system’s interfacing and communication protocols comply with the following standards:
- IEC 61162-1/2: Standard interfaces for digital navigation data exchange (GPS, gyro, radar, ECDIS).
- IEC 61162-450: LAN connectivity for maintenance and ship’s network integration.
- IEC 61993-2: Alarm output interface standard.
- ITU-R M.823-2: DGPS input standard.
The system operates within the specified VHF frequency band (156.025–162.025 MHz) and meets the required frequency accuracy of ±3 × 10⁻⁶. The type of emission (AIS: G1D, F1D) and modulation (GMSK) conform to international AIS transmission standards. Channel spacing is 25 kHz, and the output power is rated at 12.5W (transmit) / 1W (receive).
For vessels operating in the UAE, including those calling at Jebel Ali Port, Port Rashid, Khalifa Port, Port of Fujairah, and Khor Fakkan, the JHS-183 meets the regulatory requirements for shipborne navigation equipment as recognized by the Federal Transport Authority (FTA) and international classification societies.
Onboard Maintenance & Inspection Standards
The JHS-183 is designed for ease of maintenance. The built-in automatic self-diagnosis function allows operators to quickly identify and address system issues without specialized diagnostic equipment. The LCD display’s rated lifespan of 50,000 hours minimizes the need for display replacement during normal operational life. The IP56 protection rating on the transponder and IP55 rating on the controller ensure reliable operation in maritime environments with exposure to salt spray, humidity, and dust.
Regular inspection of the AIS transponder and controller is recommended in accordance with the vessel’s maintenance schedule. The single coax cable connection between the display and transponder reduces potential failure points and simplifies troubleshooting.
